Funics Home Education sessions are fun, practical literacy classes designed to help children develop their phonics, reading and writing skills with support from experienced Early Years and Primary teachers.
Our sessions build on the foundations of early phonics, helping children become more confident with sounds, letter formation, blending, reading and writing – without relying on just lots of worksheets or sitting at a table for the whole session.
Children recap and build confidence with individual letter sounds and correct letter formation before progressing onto digraphs (sounds represented by two letters, such as *sh* and *ai*) and trigraphs (sounds represented by three letters, such as *igh*).
As children progress, we also work on blending sounds to read words, segmenting words for spelling, tricky words and sentence structure, helping children understand how their phonics knowledge fits together and can be used in their reading and writing.
Just like our preschool sessions, learning is active, practical and fun. We use games, movement, stories, sensory activities, hands-on resources and practical challenges to help children learn, practise and remember new skills.
Our teachers are there to guide each child and their grown-up, explain what we are teaching and show you how you can continue supporting learning at home. You’ll leave each session knowing what your child is working on, why it matters and simple ways to practise it between sessions.
We recognise that children learn at different rates, particularly within home education, so activities can be adapted to support different ages, stages and levels of confidence.
Funics Home Education is about building confident readers and writers through practical, purposeful learning – while keeping it enjoyable.

Meet Rachael, Helen and Pam
Funics classes are created and delivered by experienced teachers who are passionate about giving children the very best foundations for learning.
Rachael and Helen – Co-founders of Funics
Rachael and Helen are qualified teachers with over 50 years of combined experience in education, predominantly within Early Years and Key Stage 1. Both continue to work with children in educational settings alongside running Funics.
Together, they have developed the Funics approach, combining their knowledge of early literacy, phonics, child development, movement and early writing skills. They also deliver training to teachers, Early Years practitioners and university students, sharing practical approaches to supporting children's development and school readiness.
Pam – Funics Teacher
Pam runs one of our Friday Funics sessions and is also a qualified teacher. She brings a wealth of classroom experience to the team and is trained in dyslexia, giving her additional insight into the different ways children learn and develop their early literacy skills.
Between us, we believe that young children learn best when they are moving, exploring, talking, playing and having fun. Our aim is for children to leave Funics feeling confident and excited about learning – and for their grown-ups to leave with lots of ideas and reassurance too.
Your child isn't just attending an activity class – they're being supported by experienced educators who understand how young children learn.
