Meet Alicia Afonso
As a young dancer, Alicia trained at the Elizabeth Hill School of Dance and Drama in Merseyside, before taking a 3 year vocational course at Phil Winston’s Theatreworks.
After performing professionally in London’s West End for 8 years, Alicia now has her own theatre school, the Afonso School of Performing Arts Ltd, based in Hertfordshire, as well as an online teacher training platform for the IDTA Level 4 qualification.
With 24 years of teaching experience, Alicia is a multi award-winning teacher, adjudicator, a Fellow of the IDTA and has enjoyed lecturing and running workshops for the IDTA and other dance associations in recent years. Previously a full-time faculty member at Jelli Studios Theatre Arts College where she trained student teachers, as well as the Btec and HND courses. She is also certified with Acrobatic Arts and Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT).
Alicia is proud to have won a prestigious Carl Alan Award, three IDTA teaching awards including the Arthur J. Gallagher Bursary in 2014, awarded for gaining the highest mark in any associate teaching exam within the theatre branch of the IDTA, as well as the John Knight Award for achieving the highest mark in Fellowship Theatre Craft 2018 and again in Modern Jazz in 2024.
Her professional credits include June in Chicago the Musical, Garrick Theatre, London; ensemble and swing in We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre, London; Liz in Chicago the Musical UK tour; dance captain in Dick Whittington at the Derngate Theatre, Northampton; ensemble in West End Rocks, Reading; ensemble in Cinderella, Bristol Hippodrome and Northampton.
Alicia also appeared on many TV shows, including the live broadcast of BBC 2012 Olympic Handover Party and numerous concerts as a featured dancer.
As a child, Alicia was a championship dancer and is proud to have held the following titles:

Winner of IDTA Ken Dodd Tap Award
